Lets get started by you giving me a little info
1- Shop size and floor plan - please include ceiling height.
2- Number of people using the compressed air
3- What type of equipment will be taxing the compressed air supply be sure to include any air fed hoods or the like
4- What type of water separators or Compressed air dryers do you have
5- What spray guns do you plan to use brand, type & model.
6- What type od exhaust system do you plan on.
This information will put us on our way to your shops compressed air system

1 - 30' x 40' open beam pitched roof ceiling 10' all wide open
2 - 1 mostly but sometimes 2
3 - spray guns - sanders both orbital and inline no air fed hoods
4 - sharpe I'm looking to get a desiccant type unit
5 - the guns are iwatas gravity feds I'll have to get the model numbers
6 - don't have anything yet
question what do you think - would it be ok to have the compressor outside.

Now that we are armed with the information here are my suggestions.
Compressor should be at least a 5 HP preferably a 2 stage with a 60 gallon tank receiver.
I am sending you 3 examples of suggested piping - the loop system would be my first choice using copper as the conduit.
Your intent to install a desiccant compressed air drying system is a very good idea

Locating the compressor outside is okay depending on the climate and is protected from the elements.
