Hey hub! I am also looking at the same compressor that gkspotrster is looking at. The IR 5 horse 60 gallon. I noticed that it is only a single stage compressor. I am wanting it for my garage for sanding, grinding, priming and small paint work. Nothing major, no completes. I was just wondering if this one would be a good compressor if at a later date I moved to a bigger shop and could do a complete? Or be a full use compressor for a full service body shop with two guys working.

Hey Dave,
If you won't need pressures greater than 125 PSI a single stage compressor will serve you well. Single stage compressors run cooler than two stage compressors. Just to make sure, what is the stated ACFM and at what PSI ?

Whoops - I about forgot ! Dave for every thousand feet above sea level compressors are three (3) percent less efficient So if you live in Denver a two stage would be recommended

Hub, the acfm is 18 @90psi

Here in hutchinson Ks the elevation is around 1500 feet.

Hey Dave,
That fits the high end CFM per horse power rating.
18 CFM @ 90 PSI will be more than adequate for the work load you discribed.
Piped properly it will serve you well.

No way will that keep up with 2 guys working.
One air sander will take most all the air that compressor can put out,
and it will cause it to run almost continuously, which will
give you heat and moisture problems.

I have two small shops two employees in each we have similar compressors and we have plenty of air. Your air sanders must be knock offs that use a lot more air our Hutchins use less than 10cfm under full load.

An adequate compressed air supply is important and in my opinion thats what dave236 will have based on the compressor and work load he discribed.

How can that handle two people useing air sanders?
One sander will pull around 15 cfm.
My compressor puts out the same amount, and it runs most the time
when sanding. That's just for me, one person, he said for two.

Via this post lets ask Wilson to give us a little more detail on his/her air system and the air tools they use. Then you can compare it to your set up.

Compressor = 18cfm@90

one air sander = 15cfm@90

That only leaves 3cfm for guy #2

How can this be so hard to understand.
