hey Hub what is the ideal cfm for a compressor? say for running air tools and painting.
my local parts store is selling 60 gallon upright with a 5 horse it says its a 15cfm made by develbliss, i have a old one made in the 70's. it runs like a champ. it is surprisingly quiet compared to a Quincy i had. thinking of buying it and putting it away for a back up.

Good Morning Socal,
How to evaluate your compressor needs.
Add the CFM & PSI needed for all the equipment to be operated at the same time - plus 25% for airline loss. This will help determine the compressor size needed.

Simply put - large enough to produce enough air for your needs - plus some to spare WITHOUT running constantly.

15 CFM at what PSI? Three CFM @ 90 PSI per HP is a good compressor.
Is that 15 CFM under load or peak?

If you do regular maintenance on that old compressor, it should last a long long time.

i don't know if its peek or load. i will have to look and get back to you.
i just changed the oil on the old one. can you tell me what else i should do to it and when is a good time to change the oil again. thanks for the help again Hub

Ok,
Beside changing the oil - and that should be done every :?:

hours as prescribed in the operating manual.

Clean the cooling fins on the cylinder body

Clean the cooling fins on the intercoller pipe

Clean the intake filter at lease every 30 dys. More often if its exposed & in a dusty area.

Drain the water from the receiver (tank) every morning - Just the water not all the air. If getting to the drain is a pain :wink:

- install an automatic drain, they are not expensive and save a lot of time. install it and forget it.

You can't go wrong with an Ingersoll Rand air compressor. One benefit to purchasing an IR is you should not have any trouble finding an authorized factory service center in your area.

FYI- My compressor recommends changing the oil every one hundred hours. The kicker is how does one know when the machine has one hundred hours on it. To solve the problem, I installed an hour meter. It was inexpensive and a simple installation. It is been my experience, in a home shop, it takes a while to log one hundred hours. In my opinion, it takes the guess work out.

I have a compressor its 5.5hp 25 gallon, 8.4scfm @40, 6.4scfm @90. Is it good for spraying my iwata lph400, and whats the difference between cfm and scfm, are my scfm numbers smaller, bigger, or the same in cfm.

Good Morning zc1,
The LPH400LV requires 9.5 CFM @ 16 PSI.
Your compressed air supply is okay when spraying for short periods - BUT - marginal when spraying for longer times.
If the compressor is running more than 50% of the time it will be delivering very hot air loaded with compressed air humidity - this could contribute to the problem you discribed in an earlier thread.

The S is for standard - a criterion used to make that measurement

CFM & SCFM in most cases are the same. ACFM is the important one
Actual - free - usable- delivered.

How often do you drain the cooling tank on the compressor?

That doesn't surprise me. If the air passes through the tank before it has a chance to cool and condasate there wouldn't be any liquid water. If the air is hot enough it would carry the water vaper (CAH) through the gun and into the paint stream - have you experenced any water dripping from the quick coupler or anyother places in the system?

Surprisingly no, it always dry. The only time I get any water in the tank is when I'm using a die grinder, which is an air hog and causes the tank cycling allot.
